Alcatraz Accessibility Guide

Alcatraz is more accessible than its steep terrain suggests, but it helps to know what to expect. Here’s how the ferry, the island, and the Cellhouse work for visitors with mobility, hearing, or vision considerations.

The Ferry

Ferries departing Pier 33 are fully wheelchair accessible, with accessible boarding ramps and restrooms. Crew members assist with boarding on request.

The Climb — and the SEAT Tram

The walk from the island dock to the Cellhouse entrance climbs roughly 130 feet over a quarter mile — the steepest part of any Alcatraz visit. An electric shuttle known as the SEAT tram carries visitors who need assistance from the dock up to the Cellhouse level. Ask island staff at the dock about tram service for your visit — availability can vary by day.

Inside the Cellhouse

Most of the main Cellhouse tour route — the cellblocks, dining hall, and central corridors — is wheelchair accessible. Some historic areas (certain stairways, the hospital wing when open, and parts of the recreation yard route) are not. The “Doing Time” audio tour follows an accessible path through the main route.

Audio Tour Accessibility

  • The “Doing Time” Cellhouse audio tour is available in 11 languages
  • Ask at the audio tour distribution point in the Cellhouse about transcripts and assistive listening options for your visit

Planning Tips

  • Allow extra time — accessible routes on the island are sometimes longer than the direct paths
  • Day tours offer more flexibility than night tours, since you can take any return ferry and pace the visit freely
  • Weekday mornings mean smaller crowds and easier tram boarding
  • Wheelchairs are not available to borrow on the island — bring your own mobility equipment
