Before You Visit Alcatraz: What to Know

A few minutes of preparation makes the difference between a comfortable visit and a cold, rushed one. Here’s everything to sort out before your ferry leaves Pier 33.

What to Wear

  • Layers, always. The island runs 10–15°F cooler than downtown San Francisco, and the ferry deck is windy year-round. Bring a jacket even on a warm city day — especially for the night tour.
  • Closed-toe walking shoes with grip. The path from the dock to the Cellhouse climbs about 130 feet — the equivalent of a 13-story building — over a quarter mile of steep, sometimes gravelly walkway. Sandals and heels are a bad idea.

What to Bring

  • Your mobile e-ticket and photo ID — ready to scan at Pier 33
  • Packaged snacks and bottled water — allowed on the island (no glass, no alcohol). Note: no food is sold on the island itself; refreshments are available on the ferry
  • Camera or phone — the crossing offers Golden Gate Bridge and skyline views in both directions
  • A daypack-sized bag only

What’s Not Allowed

  • Large backpacks and luggage
  • Tripods
  • Outside alcohol and glass containers
  • Pets (service animals excepted)
  • Smoking and vaping anywhere on the island

How Long to Plan For

Most visitors spend 2.5 to 3 hours total, including both ferry crossings and the full “Doing Time” Cellhouse audio tour. On the day tour you can stay longer — return ferries run continuously until the last boat. History enthusiasts regularly spend 4+ hours exploring the outdoor areas, exhibits, and ranger programs.

Timing Tips from Repeat Visitors

  • Take the first ferry (8:40 AM) for the smallest crowds in the Cellhouse and the best light for photos
  • Book the night tour if you’ve been before, or want smaller groups and evening ranger programs — it sells out faster than the day tour
  • Winter and weekday mornings are the quietest times of year on the island
  • Book 2–3 months ahead for peak season (May–October); 1–2 weeks is usually enough in winter

Accessibility

The ferry is fully wheelchair accessible, and an electric shuttle (SEAT tram) runs from the dock to the Cellhouse for visitors who need assistance with the climb. See our full Alcatraz accessibility guide.

With Kids?

Alcatraz is a popular family stop. Children under 5 are typically free but still need a ticket for the ferry manifest. The audio tour engages older kids well; the prison subject matter can be intense for younger ones.
