How far in advance should I purchase tickets?

Tickets often sell out weeks in advance, so it’s recommended to book as early as possible to secure your preferred date.

Yes, the Cellhouse Audio Tour is available in multiple languages including English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Korean.

Bags larger than 16″ x 20″ are not allowed on Alcatraz Island. Small backpacks are permitted. There is no storage available at Pier 33 or on the island, and all visitors must pass through security before boarding.

At this time, tickets must be purchased in the name of the attendee. The individual whose name is on the ticket must be present with a valid ID during the tour.

There are no discounts available for Alcatraz tours at this time.

Each visitor is allowed to purchase a maximum of 14 tickets.

Tour operators and travel agents must book tickets using the client’s name and credit card. The client must present a valid photo ID and the credit card used for the purchase.

The winter months (January to March) offer fewer crowds. For better weather, the ideal months to visit are April-May or September-October. Summer can be cold and foggy.

Plan to spend at least 2 to 3 hours on Alcatraz Island.

Visitors can enjoy guided programs, a Cellhouse Audio Tour featuring former inmates and guards, a historical orientation video, museums, and bookshops. Nesting season is from September to February, adding to the experience.

The weather on Alcatraz can be unpredictable, so bring a light jacket or sweater. During winter months, a raincoat or wet gear is recommended. Wear comfortable shoes, as the island is steep and hilly.

The ferry ride takes 10-15 minutes. Return trips run frequently and are posted on the dock and Ferry Schedule page. Ferries are first come, first serve.

If you haven’t printed your tickets at home, you can collect them at the Pier 33 Prepaid Ticket booth (will-call). Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure (one hour during peak season) with a valid photo ID and the credit card used for the purchase.

Yes, photo ID is required and will be checked before boarding. One name on the reservation must match the ID.

Street parking near Fisherman’s Wharf is limited. There are at least 15 commercial parking lots near Pier 33, with the closest located at 80 Francisco Street at Kearny.

Alcatraz Island is steep, but the SEAT shuttle offers transportation from the docks to the prison for visitors with mobility needs. Areas like the dock, prison main floor, museums, bookstores, and theater are wheelchair accessible.

No, all ticket sales are final and non-refundable.

You may request to change your reservation at least 72 hours in advance, but no changes are allowed within 72 hours of the tour. No-shows receive no compensation.

No, minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times on Alcatraz Island.

Assistive Listening Devices are available at Pier 33. ASL interpreters are available upon request with at least five days’ notice. Call 415-561-4958 for more information.

We recommend against booking tickets on your day of arrival, as travel delays cannot be accommodated. Changes and cancellations cannot be made on the day of the tour.

  • F Line Streetcar: The most direct route; use the Bay Street stop.
  • #10 Townsend Bus: Available weekdays only, operating until 7 p.m.

On-Street Parking
Parking in the Fisherman’s Wharf area is limited, especially during peak summer months. Most street parking spaces are metered with a maximum limit of four hours.

Commercial Parking Lots
Within a five-block radius of Pier 33, there are fifteen commercial parking lots offering over 3,000 spaces for convenient access to Alcatraz Landing.

The Landing at Pier 33 in San Francisco is fully accessible, providing a smooth boarding experience for visitors with mobility needs. Accessible restrooms and ramps are available at the pier.

S.E.A.T. – Sustainable Easy Access Transport
On the island, the S.E.A.T. (Sustainable Easy Access Transport) tram offers transportation between the dock and the Cellhouse for those with limited mobility. Reserved for individuals with health conditions or disabilities, the tram assists on Alcatraz’s steep terrain.
