Alcatraz Sold Out? Here’s What to Do
Alcatraz regularly sells out weeks in advance — sometimes over a month ahead during summer and holidays. If your date shows no availability, you still have real options. Work through these in order.

1. Check Adjacent Departure Times and Dates
Sold out doesn’t always mean the whole day is gone. Morning departures sell out first; early-afternoon slots often remain when mornings are full. Night tours (Tues–Sat) sometimes have availability when the day tour is sold out — and many visitors consider the night tour the better experience anyway. If your trip has any flexibility, check one day earlier or later.

3. See Alcatraz from the Water Anyway
If your dates truly won’t work, a San Francisco Bay cruise is the best fallback — it circles Alcatraz Island and sails under the Golden Gate Bridge, with the same skyline views the ferry crossing offers. It doesn’t dock at the island, but it’s the closest experience available on a sold-out day, and it rarely sells out.

4. Book the Rest of the Waterfront
Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Musée Mécanique, and the Hyde Street Pier historic ships are all within a 15-minute walk of Pier 33 — a full day on the waterfront even without landing on the island. If you’re visiting again within a year, book Alcatraz for that trip now; it’s the one San Francisco attraction where booking months out is normal.
Why Does Alcatraz Sell Out So Fast?
Ferry capacity is fixed and the island caps daily visitors, so supply can’t expand to meet summer demand. There is no standby line, no gate sales at Pier 33 for sold-out departures, and no way to reach the island except the official ferry. This is why we recommend booking 2–3 months ahead for May–October travel.
Sold-Out FAQs
Can I buy Alcatraz tickets at Pier 33 on the day?
Not reliably. Same-day availability at the pier is rare, especially in summer. Booking online in advance is the only dependable way onto the island.
Do more tickets get released for sold-out dates?
Sometimes — availability shifts as schedules and reservations adjust. That’s exactly what our date alert above watches for.
Is there any other way to get to Alcatraz?
No. Private boats can’t dock at the island. The ferry from Pier 33 is the only access.
