Plenty of visitors arrive on Alcatraz expecting a café at the top and are surprised to find none. There are no restaurants or food vendors on the island itself — the only place refreshments are sold is on the ferry. Here’s the reality behind it, and how to plan so you’re not hungry two hours into your visit.

The Short Answer
Alcatraz is a historic island site reached only by ferry from Pier 33 — there’s no other way on or off. There are no commercial facilities on the island: no restaurants, no snack bars, no vending. Everything that comes to the island comes by boat, and the island’s role today is preserving the historic prison and grounds, not running concessions. So the food operation lives where the logistics work — on the ferry.
The Island Once Had the Opposite Problem
It wasn’t always this quiet. In its prison years, food was central to daily life on the Rock. The dining hall — which inmates nicknamed the “gas chamber” for the tear-gas canisters mounted in its ceiling — fed the whole population three times a day, and mealtimes were among the most controlled moments in the prison’s routine. You can still walk through the dining hall on the audio tour; it’s one of the most evocative rooms on the island. The kitchens that once ran non-stop now serve no one.
What You Can Bring
The good news: you’re allowed to bring your own. Packaged snacks and bottled water are permitted on the island — with two rules: no glass containers and no alcohol. For a 2.5-to-3-hour visit (longer if you linger on the day tour), a small snack and a water bottle make a real difference, especially with kids or on a cold, windy afternoon.
Where You Can Buy
If you’d rather travel light, refreshments are sold on the ferry in both directions. It’s the one place on the whole trip where you can buy something to eat or drink, so plan around the crossings — grab what you need on the boat out, or save your appetite for back on the mainland.
Where to Eat Before or After
The best meal strategy is to bookend your visit on the mainland. Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the surrounding waterfront are all within a short walk of Pier 33 — the wharf is about 10 minutes on foot — and they’re packed with places to eat. Grab a proper meal before you board or after you return, and keep the island itself to a snack and water. It’s a full day on the waterfront even beyond the island, so plan the food around the crossings rather than fighting the no-vendor reality.
A Simple Food Plan
- Eat before you board, or buy on the ferry out
- Pack a packaged snack and a bottled water (no glass, no alcohol)
- Don’t count on buying anything once you’re on the island
- Save the real meal for Fisherman’s Wharf — it’s a 10-minute walk from Pier 33
