What You Can’t Bring to Alcatraz (and What to Bring Instead)

There’s a security screening before you board the ferry to Alcatraz, and a few rules catch visitors off guard at the pier — usually the bag that’s too big or the bottle of wine someone packed for the crossing. Here’s exactly what to leave behind and what to bring instead, so nothing slows you down at Pier 33.

Entrance walkway on Alcatraz Island leading up toward the Cellhouse
Travel light: the walk up to the Cellhouse is steep, and there’s no storage at the pier or on the island.

What’s Not Allowed

  • Oversized bags. Bags larger than 16″ x 20″ are not allowed on the island. Small backpacks are fine; large backpacks and luggage are not.
  • Tripods. Cameras and phones are welcome, but tripods are not permitted.
  • Outside alcohol and glass containers. Neither is allowed on the ferry or the island.
  • Pets. Not permitted, with the exception of service animals.
  • Smoking and vaping. Prohibited anywhere on the island.

The Storage Trap

Here’s the catch that trips people up: there is no storage at Pier 33 or on the island. If you show up with a suitcase or an oversized pack, there’s nowhere to check it — you’ll be turned back at security. If you’re visiting on your way to or from somewhere, sort your luggage out before you head to the pier. A daypack-sized bag is the right call.

What to Bring Instead

  • Your mobile e-ticket and photo ID — ready to scan, with the name on the reservation matching the ID.
  • Packaged snacks and bottled water — allowed on the island (no glass, no alcohol). There’s no food sold on the island itself, so this matters.
  • A camera or phone — the crossing serves up Golden Gate Bridge and skyline views in both directions.
  • Layers and closed-toe shoes with grip — the island runs 10–15°F cooler than downtown, the ferry deck is windy, and the walk to the Cellhouse is steep.
  • A daypack-sized bag only — under the 16″ x 20″ limit.

Why the Rules Exist

Alcatraz is a historic island site reached only by ferry, with a single security checkpoint and no commercial facilities on the island. The bag limit keeps the screening line moving and protects the historic spaces; the no-glass, no-alcohol rules keep a windy island with steep paths safe. None of it is onerous once you pack light — most visitors never think about it again after the pier.

Strollers, Wheelchairs, and Mobility Gear

Bring your own mobility equipment — wheelchairs are not available to borrow on the island. The ferry itself is fully wheelchair accessible with accessible boarding and restrooms, and the SEAT tram can carry visitors who need help with the steep climb from the dock to the Cellhouse (availability varies by day, so ask island staff). Strollers are allowed but hard work on the steep, gravelly path up — many families with the youngest kids find a carrier easier. See our accessibility guide for the full picture.
