How the Alcatraz Ferry Works: Departures, Returns, and the Mistake to Avoid

The ferry is the only way to reach Alcatraz — there’s no bridge, no other dock, no private boats allowed. Understanding how departures and returns actually work makes the whole visit smoother, and helps you sidestep the one error that ruins people’s plans. Here’s the system.

View of Alcatraz Island from the ferry crossing San Francisco Bay
The crossing takes about 15 minutes each way, with Golden Gate Bridge and skyline views in both directions.

Where It Leaves From

Every Alcatraz ferry departs Pier 33, Alcatraz Landing, on The Embarcadero — about a 10-minute walk from Fisherman’s Wharf. Your ticket includes the roundtrip crossing, and the ride itself takes about 15 minutes each way, with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city skyline, and Angel Island.

Day Tour: Pick a Departure, Return Whenever

On the day tour, ferries leave approximately every 30 minutes from 8:40 AM to 3:50 PM. You choose your outbound departure time when you book — but you’re not locked to a return. Return boats run continuously throughout the day, and you can board any of them: stay 90 minutes or stay until the last ferry leaves the island. That flexibility is the day tour’s biggest advantage. Morning departures are the least crowded and the best light for photos.

Night Tour: A Fixed Round Trip

The night tour works differently. It runs Tuesday through Saturday, and the crossing is a fixed itinerary — your outbound and return are part of a single ~2.5-hour experience, with live narration on the way out. You don’t pick your return boat; it’s built into the tour. The evening times shift by season and are confirmed at checkout.

Returns Are First Come, First Served

On the day tour, return ferries are first come, first served, with times posted on the dock and on our ferry schedule. There’s no assigned return seat — just join the line for the next boat when you’re ready to leave. On busy afternoons, allow a little extra time for the last few departures.

Weather Rarely Stops It

The ferries operate in nearly all weather — San Francisco fog and wind are part of the experience, and sailings are only canceled in rare severe conditions. Dress in layers regardless: the bay runs 10–15°F cooler than downtown and the deck is windy year-round.

How Long to Budget

Add it up and Alcatraz is a half-day outing. The crossing is about 15 minutes each way, and most visitors spend 2.5 to 3 hours on the island including the full audio tour — history enthusiasts regularly stay 4+ hours on the day tour, since return boats keep running. Factor in getting to Pier 33 and your 30-minute arrival buffer, and you’ve filled a comfortable half day. Don’t schedule something tight right after; the island has a way of holding your attention longer than planned.

The Mistake to Avoid

Here it is: arriving late for your outbound departure. Plan to be at Pier 33 at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time. Boarding closes before the ferry leaves, and missed departures can’t always be rebooked on sold-out days — and Alcatraz sells out often. A missed boat on a full day can mean missing the island entirely. Give yourself the buffer; it’s the cheapest insurance on the trip.
