Best Time of Year to Visit Alcatraz

Alcatraz runs every day of the year, but the experience changes a lot with the season — crowds, weather, light, and how far ahead you need to book all shift. Here’s how the year breaks down so you can pick the window that fits your trip.

Alcatraz Island under grey winter skies on San Francisco Bay
Winter on the bay: the quietest months on the island, if you don’t mind the grey.

Winter (January–March): Fewest Crowds

The winter months are the quietest time of year on the island. If your priority is space in the Cellhouse and shorter lines, this is the window — and it’s the easiest time to book, with one to two weeks’ notice usually enough. The trade-off is weather: expect cool, sometimes wet crossings. Bring a raincoat or wet-weather gear on top of your layers.

Spring & Fall (April–May, September–October): Best Weather

For the best balance of conditions, the ideal months are April–May or September–October. Crowds are lighter than peak summer, and the weather is generally at its most cooperative. These shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for most first-time visitors.

Summer (June–August): Busiest — and Foggier Than You’d Think

Summer is peak season, and it’s the hardest time to get on the island: book two to three months ahead for May–October travel, and expect morning departures to sell out first. It’s also the season that surprises people most — San Francisco summers can be cold and foggy, and the island runs 10–15°F cooler than downtown, with a windy ferry deck year-round. Pack a jacket even on a warm city day.

Around Halloween: A Special Case

The night tour is in unusually high demand around Halloween. If an atmospheric after-dark visit is on your list for late October, treat it like peak summer and book early — night tours run only Tuesday through Saturday and sell out quickly.

Weekdays Beat Weekends

Within any season, weekday mornings are consistently the quietest — smaller crowds in the Cellhouse, shorter lines, and easier boarding, including for the SEAT tram if you need it. If your schedule is flexible, a Tuesday or Wednesday morning in a shoulder month is about as good as Alcatraz gets. Weekends and holidays draw the biggest crowds year-round, so if those are your only options, book further ahead and take the earliest departure you can.

Time of Day Matters Too

Whatever the season, the first ferry (8:40 AM) is the least crowded departure and the best light for photos. Day tour ferries run approximately every 30 minutes from 8:40 AM to 3:50 PM, and because you can board any return boat, an early start lets you set your own pace. For a completely different feel, the night tour trades daylight for smaller groups, a sunset crossing, and exclusive evening ranger programs.

Any Season: Dress for the Bay

The single most common mistake is underdressing. The crossing is breezy in every season, the island is exposed, and the walk from the dock up to the Cellhouse climbs about 130 feet — you’ll warm up going up and cool down fast at the top. Closed-toe shoes with grip and a warm layer serve you well in July and January alike. Our before-you-visit guide has the full what-to-wear list.

So, When Should You Go?

  • Smallest crowds: January–March
  • Best weather: April–May or September–October
  • Most availability pressure: June–August (book 2–3 months out)
  • Atmosphere over comfort: a night tour any season, or around Halloween
