The single most common question we get is some version of “I’m visiting in three weeks — am I too late for Alcatraz?” The honest answer: it depends on the season, the tour, and even the time of day you want. Here’s the booking-window math, based on how availability actually behaves.
The Short Answer
Alcatraz regularly sells out weeks in advance — sometimes more than a month ahead during summer and holidays. Our working rule:
- May–October (peak season): book 2–3 months ahead
- Winter and early spring: 1–2 weeks is usually enough

Why It Sells Out at All
Ferry capacity is fixed and the island caps daily visitors, so supply can’t expand when demand spikes. There is no standby line and no gate sales at Pier 33 for sold-out departures — the ferry is the only way to reach the island, and if your date shows no availability online, showing up at the pier won’t change it.
Not All Departures Sell Out Equally
Morning ferries go first. The 8:40 AM departure is the most popular boat of the day, and mornings in general sell out before anything else. When a summer date looks gone, early-afternoon slots often remain — always check the later departures before giving up on a date.
Night tours sell out faster than day tours. They run only Tuesday through Saturday with a fraction of the day tour’s capacity, and they go especially quickly in summer and around Halloween. If the night tour is the one you want, treat the booking window as longer — book as far ahead as your plans allow.
A Season-by-Season Cheat Sheet
- Summer: the crunch season. Book 2–3 months out; mornings vanish first
- Halloween window: night tours are in unusual demand — book early
- Winter (January–March): the quietest months on the island; 1–2 weeks ahead usually works
- Any season: if your trip has flexibility, checking one day earlier or later often turns a “sold out” into a booking
Booking Rules Worth Knowing Before the Window Closes
Two rules catch people out when tickets get scarce. First, tickets are purchased in the name of the attendee — the person named on the ticket must be present with valid photo ID, so you can’t stockpile tickets under one name for a group of friends arriving separately. Second, each visitor can purchase a maximum of 14 tickets; parties of 15 or more need to arrange group booking instead. Plan the names and the count before the date you want starts running low.
And on the day itself: arrive at Pier 33 30 minutes before departure. Boarding closes before the ferry leaves, and missed departures can’t always be rebooked on sold-out days — exactly the days when this article matters.
Already Too Late? You Still Have Options
Availability shifts as schedules and reservations adjust — sold out today doesn’t always mean sold out tomorrow. Our Alcatraz sold-out guide shows current week-by-week availability for both tours, updated automatically, and includes a free email alert: leave your address and we’ll tell you when space opens for upcoming dates. It also walks through the fallbacks that actually work, in order.
